What your BMI means
Body mass index (BMI) is a quick screen that compares your weight to your height. It's the standard first number clinicians look at, but it's only a starting point — it can't tell muscle from fat or account for where you carry weight. The usual adult categories are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 healthy weight, 25–29.9 overweight, and 30 or above in the obesity range.
BMI and GLP-1 medications
For weight management, GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy and Zepbound are generally considered for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher alongside a weight-related condition like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea. Meeting a threshold doesn't mean a drug is right or available for you — that's a clinical decision. See how to get a prescription for what actually happens next.
Frequently asked questions
What BMI do you need for Wegovy or Zepbound?
Generally a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition (type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea). A clinician makes the final call.
Is BMI an accurate measure of health?
It's a useful screen but imperfect — it can't separate muscle from fat or show where you carry weight. Clinicians use it alongside other measures, not on its own.
